If I could give this 10 stars I would. We have an 80 pound golden retriever that is 3 years old. We have always had a terrible time walking him due to pulling. He would drag my wife around and make it miserable for me to walk him as well. I watched some YouTube videos about conditioning him with the gentle leader and followed the instructions. Two short training sessions later he had no problems wearing it. Now every time I get it out he comes over to me, sits down and puts his face forward for me to put it on him. He LITERALLY walks next to me with out ANY pulling. It’s like he is a different dog. If you have problems with your dog pulling on a traditional leash get this now! You won’t be disappointed!!!

Pros and Cons for TL;DR:PROS – Affordable price compared to harnesses. – plenty of options for colors for the whole pack – thorough and complete instructions – product arrive as promised. – immediately reduced or eliminated most if not all pulling during walks. – humane.CONS – My lab has a very short snout, and it did seem to restrict her from opening her mouth as much as she would have liked. She still can eat and drink water and play fetch with it on, so not a huge deal, but something to consider.A little backstory. Everyday I walk a 75 lbs German Shepard and a 70 lbs Labrador retriever. I’m a pretty large guy, so I never really took much offense to a little tugging from my dogs as puppies and that inevitably led to some horrible habits. I had resigned myself to getting a nice shoulder workout every time I took them out. We had been using full body harnesses that clipped on the back, but all that did was give my dogs more leverage. I tried training and patience, but was at the end of my leash. (HA). I am inherently opposed to choker collars because it’s not my dogs fault I was a bad owner all along.Enter the Gentle Leader. I’ll admit, the product isn’t intuitive out of the box, but the instructions and DVD clarify everything very well. Getting it on and keeping it on my dogs was tough until I got the fit right, but once I found it they couldn’t shake it or paw it off. It’s recommended you ease your dogs into it by giving them a reward while wearing it repeatedly. Well, my dogs favorite thing is their walk, so I used it as their reward the first time they wore them. After about 100 yards of shaking and fidgeting with it, they got over the nose strap. We came across numerous children, dogs, and cars. I didn’t even get a pull, let alone the usual hard yank that would accompany those occurrences without a Gentle Leader. This immediately took my dogs from D grade walkers to B+. Hopefully we can make it to A very soon.Honestly one of the best purchases I have ever made on Amazon, just behind my on sale $17 XL furminator.

I rescued an extremely dog aggressive dog. It is almost impossible to take her for walks. She’s a German Shepherd and can be scary when she sees other dogs on a walk. I bought this several months ago at the advice of a trainer. But when I got it, she hated it and I felt bad using it, so I put it away.Fast forward several months. Aggression on walks got worse. So we decided to give this another try. To really try it this time. Not just for a few minutes. OH MY GOSH! It has made all the difference!!! She’s still aggressive, but she knows she can’t get the momentum going while she has this on. No more rabid looking police dog on our walks. We’re still working on stopping the barking, but now we actually CAN with this.I will say, our vet tech hooked the leash to the gentle leader AND her collar, which I recommend if you have a really aggressive powerful dog, just in case they are able to slip it off you have the collar still hooked for back up.If you have a non aggressive puller, I imagine this would be even better! Highly recommend it!

I got this for my 62lb black lab mix who is ~14 months old. As a younger dog/puppy, he never pulled much, but with age (and as he got bigger), pulling became a serious issue for him. I finally decided to try this, knowing it would be an adjustment. He is doing great so far! It has been 2 weeks. I purchased low-calorie training treats to assist with training him to wear it. They worked wonders. He gets excited every time he sees his gentle leader because he knows treats will follow. I followed the instructions on the video for introducing it to him. After introducing it to him, I started having him wear it while eating meals. He does well walking outside with it now. No pulling at all! I bring training treats along for the walk to encourage him when he needs it. He is not 100% comfortable walking with it, but the adjustment was easier than expected. One thing to emphasize is making sure the sizing is correct. He is 62lbs, but I purchased the medium for 25-60lbs because he has a smaller head/face. The medium works great for him with extra room to spare. A large would not have worked for him. Also, I thought I had it perfectly sized at first, but I believe now that the nose strap was too tight. He would not stop pawing at his face to get it off. I assumed it was due to the adjustment period and left the size where it was so that he could get used to it. Today (after 2 weeks), I took him to the park for the first time with the gentle leader on. The instructions say your dog should be able to fully pant with this on if the sizing is correct. I realized my dog could not fully pant with this on, so I loosened it up. He is no longer trying to get it off of his face during walks!

I wish I could give the “gentle leader” ten stars!! This is amazing! I’m disabled, about 90lbs, and very weak, so you can imagine me walking my 185lbs Great Dane! He has no idea how strong he is, so any little pull or jerk would end up with me on the ground. Just like a horse, the best way to control an animal that’s much bigger to you is to have control of their head. It doesn’t hurt them but it allows you to control where their attention and focus is, which is very important in dealing and training large animals. I suggest watching and utilizing the tips and directions that are given on the DVD that comes with the Gentle Leader. My boy learned in one day (with the help of some yummy treats!) that when we put the leader on that means he gets to go for a walk! He shoves his snout right in now and the best part is, he CAN’T pull me at all!! This thing is a life saver!

The media could not be loaded. I buy everything except groceries off amazon. I have also never left a review. I think this product is lifechanging enough to warrant a review. I have now had this headcollar for exactly a week. I watched several videos on it to get the fitting right. The fitting is important- it will not work as well if not fitted tightly as instructed. I waited two days to use it on walks. Just getting her used to it keeping it on while she ate all meals and giving her tons of treats. Dogs won’t like a strap across their face. But you can teach them that the headcollar means they get to go out and they don’t mind it. I have a one year old pit bull and I had stopped walking her (she used to get 3 mile walks every day) in favor of driving her to the dog park bc her pulling was so terrible. The last straw was when I took her hiking and couldn’t enjoy the scenery bc she was pulling so much for five miles straight. My bfs dog, also a terrible puller, had success with the gentle leader. I took him for a walk to test it out and it was amazing. I immediately ordered one for my dog. Within five mins of using it I could tell it was a godsend. I like to say that walking my dog with the gentle leader on is like walking a cloud. You know the cloud is there bc of the occasional light tension from direction change but otherwise my dog just floats along. It feels like you’re walking a show dog or something. If you don’t enjoy walking your dog, buy this headcollar. I used to have to wrap the leash around my forearm and then under my armpit and over my shoulder to leverage my weight against her pulling. Now I can walk her with my pinky finger while carrying a coffee in the same hand and texting with the other hand. My brother also has this product but doesn’t like it because “it didn’t train the dog not to pull when it’s not on”. This product is not supposed to replace training, it just makes it a lot easier to enjoy time with your dog. Best money I’ve spent this year. Just buy it. As you can see from the video, there is slight slack in the leash (you won’t want too much slack or the dog can step over it and get tangled bc it hangs from under the chin). This is the first time I’ve ever had slack in a leash while walking my dog. Also, the material stretches when brand new. So readjust a few days later after using for walks for the perfect, permanent fit.

This collar has transformed the walks of 9-month old “puppy” who would pull us in all sorts of directions during walks and lunge every time she saw a four-legged anything. A month later, she might give the leash a slight tug then immediately stop – not because the collar hurts her (she’s never let out a shriek or expressed any pain), but because she doesn’t like the feeling of being tugged by her snout.Besides keeping her under control in “active” situations like the one above, the collar has also very much improved the way she walks. Now she will stay by our side, not pulling ahead or straggling behind. This seems to come to her instinctively and not as a result of any pain or fear thereof. It has eliminated the doubts of my petite wife who had begin questioning whether we should keep a dog she couldn’t control. It did take some time for her (the dog, not the wife) to come to grips with it. At first, she would do her best to get this thing off: roll in the grass, rub her snout against anything she sees, or try to pull it off with her paws. Over time, she has gotten more and more used to it. While it does make her itch occasionally, she seems to be much more at ease with it now.Does our dog like it? Definitely not.Can she live with it? Certainly yes.Has it helped? 100% YES!

I am now planning to buy the bigger leader since my growing doodle is only 7 months but she fits the medium one fine for now I just want to be prepared. So before buying this I bought countless kong harnesses and regular collars and even the spike collar and none worked at all. She jumped on everyone she would literally pull me down the street so I just stopped walking her bc she was too strong for me. I came across this product after seeing my friends video of her walking her rottie and asked what was on the dog and she explained and suggested I tried it and omg I cannot express how happy I am that I did. So fast forward got it in the mail and to do around the muzzle I put a treat in the middle a few times and until she would let me fit it to her(don’t give up bc my doodle is crazy hyper and she finally pet me do it) anyways I walked her around my front yard for about 15 minutes and then took it off. The next day it was nice and I said im going to take her for a walk and I was shocked! She wasn’t able to pull me. Now granted she twirled around in the beginning thinking she could figure out a way to get it off and tried to dig it off but after a few times of her trying to get it off and failing she decided okay I give up. So first time I have been able to walk her and not have burns all over my hands or look like a complete fool. Clearly she will benefit from daily walking and soon I hope to have her fully leash trained but there is hope and I suggest giving this a try because it truly works!

When I first tried this on my dog, she did nothing but rub her nose and have a fit trying to get it off. I spent about a week, putting in on her for short periods, giving her treats, trying to make this leader associated with positive experiences. It just seemed like it wasn’t going to work for her so I set it aside.Last week, I got it out again, put it on her, gave her a treat, and immediately took her outside for a walk. It worked! This time she accepted it. Other than a moment here and there, she is doing great with this and no more pulling. It’s like walking a completely different dog.I should add, that I had skipped her walk for almost two weeks (a very long time for her). She had gotten to the point that her front-clip harness wasn’t a deterrent anymore, so I thought I’d just take a break. After not going for her daily outings for so long, she was more than happy to mostly ignore the gentle leader and focus on smelling all the great things she’d been missing out on.Now we are back to our daily walks. The biggest difference being that I am having fun on the walk too, now that I don’t have to spend so much energy working on her behavior. I do still put a harness on her in case I need to grab it for additional control (which is rare) but I only attach the leash to the head lead. I have a leash with a lighter clip on it for that. The leash clip that attaches to the harness is much thicker and heavier. All I can say is …. Gentle Leader for the win-win!!SAFETY TIP UPDATE: A couple times, I’ve had near-escape incidences, both indoors at the vets office thankfully. Once, the leash somehow became unclipped and another, she pulled the lead off her face. Now, to ensure a double-attachment, I put the leader on as usual, then I use a carabiner to secure the base of the leash clip to the loop in her collar. This way, should she get the leader off again or the leash become unclipped, the leash will still be connected to her collar. (see attached photo showing left/right side comparisons showing both parts of what I’ve described)I find that this setup does not cause any issues while walking nor stop the effectiveness of the leader.

The media could not be loaded. So I have a GSD, she is about 65 pounds, who I hated walking. It was stressful, she would pull so hard she would be choking, my arm felt like it was going to be pulled out of its socket, my hand would be red from holding the leash and trying to keep her from pulling. I tried switching her to a harness to see if that would help her so she wouldn’t choke and maybe she wouldn’t pull. I was wrong. I started looking for an answer to help so she wouldn’t pull. I found the gentle leader and ordered it after reading reviews. I was nervous she would break it since that seemed to be an issue from previous reviews but i had nothing to lose. When i got the gentle leader i followed the instructions and trained her with it. After training her for a week i took her on a walk. It was like walking a completely different dog. She tried to pull a couple times but it would just turn her around and make her face me. She pawed at it a few times at first but adjusted quickly. Now walking her is a dream, stress free for both of us. It hasn’t left any chafe marks or anything the only thing is there is an indentation in her fur along the top of her snout after long walks but that goes away after a little bit. Besides that it’s great she can pant, drink water, and even eat (part of the training instruction is to have it on them during meal time and give them treats) with it on no problem. I’ve had the gentle leader about a year now and I love it, even if it breaks i will get another one it was definitely worth the money. I recommend it to all my friends who have dogs that pull.
