PATHETIC EARTHLINGS WHO CAN SAVE YOU NOW?
Super producer Dino De Laurentiis (Dune, Barbarella) brought Alex Raymond s beloved cartoon strip and the long running movie serial to the big screen with celebrated director Mike Hodges (Get Carter, Black Rainbow) at the helm, in a delirious space opera, where Flash is King of the Impossible!
Merciless Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) decides to wreak havoc on Earth in a moment of cruel boredom. Boarding a rocket as a means of escape, star quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) and Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) find themselves on Mongo. Taken prisoner Flash must save Dale from becoming Ming s concubine, avoid the amorous intentions of Ming s wicked daughter Aura (Ornella Muti) and unite the warring Kingdoms of Mongo.
With endlessly repeatable dialogue, inimitable camp style, the sonic stylings of Queen and a delightful band of characters and actors playing them it s no wonder Flash Gordon has become one of the most beloved sci-fi spectacles of its era with directors such as Edgar Wright, Taika Waititi and Seth MacFarlane paying tribute to it in their work.

Fun movie, performances are varied but all really good, good music, and the visuals are captivating. But the real reason to get this dvd version, if youre a big fan, are the commentaries. Brian Blessed is hilarious on his track while Sam Jones and Melody Anderson are having a blast on theirs (havent checked out directors track yet). At least 2 more ways to enjoy this movie gets a 5 star from me.

Finally! A beautiful Blu-Ray transfer with many bonus features and commentary tracks.A favorite movie which my wife and I ended seeing 3 times in the theater on Christmas Day 1980! (We were planning on seeing 3 different movies, but after seeing Flash Gordon, we had to repeat.)Fun campy flick. The director’s commentary was entertaining and informative, but Brian Blessed just had a hell of a good time with his commentary. The best and most fun commentary included Flash and Dale! Sam and Melody had a great time talking about making the movie and still had that great chemistry that helped make the movie so fantastic. The other bonus features were great, too, including the half hour about the original Nic Roeg version and how it ultimately influenced what was made.Of course, I can’t talk about Flash Gordon without talking about the score and songs by Queen. (I even had to get myself all the available sheet music for the wonderful music, and it wasn’t easy.) One of the best scores ever. (Outside of the John Williams Star Wars scores, of course.)
