I used to use a lightweight clay product to make it easier to transport up and down stairs. But I noticed it sticking to the butts and feet of my long-haired cats… and hardening in place like cement that they couldn’t clean off. I even had to cut away some of their butt feathering to get rid of it. Also, the pee didn’t sink into clumps… but sat on top of the clay-based product looking kind of foamy, and stinking. I even took them to the vet to see if it was something wrong with them. Nope… it’s whatever they’re doing to make the clay-based litter lightweight. And think of what that clay is doing in their guts when they do clean it out of their paws! No way would I ever use clay products again. So I switched to OKO Supersoft which solved every problem… comparable price, lightweight, fine grain scoops easily, good sinking clumps, no butt-sticking, and a bio-degradable product that doesn’t smell like cat pee. I can’t believe I hadn’t discovered this product before.

I am really impressed with ÖKOCAT Natural Wood Clumping Litter. I originally purchased this because I’m a cat breeder, and it’s important to use litter that won’t harm very young kittens if they consume it. However, the mother cats refused to use the litter box with this litter in it, and the kittens weren’t getting the idea that the litter box was their toilet, so I had to find an alternative.I had used half the box and stored the rest in my closet. Fast forward four months, and I was getting low on clay litter. I decided to use the remaining amount in the box of ÖKOCAT to fill one of the two litter boxes in my upstairs bathroom, and I chose to put it in the one that’s most often used. I filled the other litter box with standard clay litter. This gave my cats an option about which one they prefer to use. To my surprise, they started using the ÖKOCAT. While the clay litter is still the most popular choice among my cats, the ÖKOCAT got used regularly. There’s no smell, very little mess, and half this box has literally lasted over a month with five cats using it. I’m impressed! I know ÖKOCAT makes a variety that isn’t pellets, and I’ve decided to give that version a try next. If it lasts just as long, it may be my primary litter going forward. My only complaint with the pellets is it isn’t as easy to clean the litter box as it is to clean clay litter, but for how long it’s lasted, no smell, and very little mess when the cats leave the box, I’m willing to put up with it. I love that it clumps, so it’s easy to find those in the litter box. I just have to isolate the clump by itself so I don’t accidentally remove pellets that are still good.

We love this litter so much, we’ve tried many different kinds but this one checks all the boxes. It clumps really well and lasts forever. I can’t smell the pee and if my kitties bury their poop properly, I can’t smell that either. It is flushable and totally natural. It has some dust when you pour it in but since it’s not made with chemicals I’m not really bothered by that. Also, every litter tracks a little bit so we have a top entry litter box which cuts down almost all the tracking of litter out of the box. We have short haired kitties but don’t have an issue with it sticking to their fur or paws! The main thing we love about it, is that it prevents bacteria growth by absorbing so well and locking it in the wood chips. Also very soft like pieces of cardboard :) super cheap so go ahead and give it a try!

I hate the smell of scented cat litter, so I’ve tried many natural options. This is my favorite, by far! I currently have just one female cat, so her urine isn’t as concentrated/ammoniac as male cats’, but this litter eliminates the smell. And when she’s polite enough to cover her poo, it eliminates that odor, as well. This litter clumps better than any other natural product I’ve found, and better than a lot of clay-based ones, as well. There are rarely any little bits that fall off the main clump ball.As for tracking, there is some, but I have yet to find a litter that doesn’t. I don’t use a litter mat, and the litter doesn’t go beyond a foot or so away from the box. It’s as close to 100% dust-free as you can get, I think. I’ve never seen any.It also seems very economical, so far. I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks & as you can see in the picture, not a whole lot is gone from the box. Most importantly, my cat seems to like this litter, too! She digs deeper when she uses it, but doesn’t spend forever in there, either.I swear I’m not affiliated w/ the company at all, I just think I may have fallen in love with a cat litter! Hahahaha!

After using this litter for about 3 months, I don’t have enough superlatives to describe how good it is, and can’t imagine ever going back to clay litter. There are some drawbacks, but not many. Here’s a comparison with “normal” litter (I used to use Dr Elsey’s, which is as good a clay litter as exists IMO).PROS:- It really is flushable! I live in a walk-up, and carrying heavy bags of poop/clay down stairs every day was not helping my back, besides the environmental impact of all those plastic bags and the trucks to carry them to the dump. Just scoop, put in the toilet, use the scoop to break up any particularly large urine clumps, and flush.- Much lighter than clay litter. Again, my back is grateful- Smells like freshly-cut wood. Really a nice scent, nothing artificial about it, but does a surprisingly good job at trapping odors.- Zero dust. None.- Does not attract insects like other natural (corn or wheat based) litters- Because the pellets are larger they do not get stuck in my cat’s pawsCONS:- Tracks worse than normal litter. Much of this is because the pellets are larger, and are not as easily trapped by the litter mat outside of the box. Possibly could be fixed with a different mat.- Clumps are not as hard, although still firm enough to easily scoop. In a way this is good, because larger urine clumps need to be broken up in order to flush.- Requires a litter scoop with larger holes (get “Catit Cat Litter Scoop”, ASIN B0035HB8XI)

I reviewed this product quite awhile back and was thoroughly unhappy at the time because of tracking and scooping issues. I still object to those problems. I can’t find my old review but wanted to submit a new one. After several months, I can now say that I like this stuff very, very much. I’m currently switching from World’s Best and Swheat Scoop. I abandoned Arm & Hammer’s disappointing corn-base litter long ago, and I find Blue Buffalo litter a bit on the heavy side, and the odor control isn’t in the same league with this stuff.Pros:- Odor control. Wow. Some of the best I’ve encountered, either with natural, clay, or unnatural (e.g., silica-based). It works remarkably well w/o heavy masking scents. I have three very large cat boxes; I use World’s Best (or Swheat) in two, and Oko in the other. The first two boxes need to be scooped out at least once a day and emptied completely after 3-4 weeks. With the Oko, I confess I’ve gone as long as 4-5 days without scooping at all (while I’ve been away). After 5 days w/o scooping, the Oko smells about the same as World’s Best or Swheat after 1-2 days.- Dust. There isn’t any, to speak of. I notice this when vacuuming the mats under my litter boxes. No dust at all around the Oko box. I thought the other “natural” litters were good about dust, but this is the best, as far as I can tell.- Weight. Fantastic. I have a bad back, but the containers are light and easy to handle. Environmentally I prefer the cardboard containers to World’ Best’s plastic bags. I have an Oko subscription; both my package delivery people and I are much happier these days. Also, even heavily used Oko litter can be dumped out of the box and carried with much less trouble than other lightweight litters.- Quality control. I’ve had moldy batches of both World’s Best and Swheat. Also, rodents are sometimes attracted to both the corn and wheat-based products. They seem largely uninterested in wood.Neutrals:- Clumping is ok but not the tightest on the planet.- Texture. It’s different. With a fussy cat, I’d mix litters for a few weeks and then continue with the Oko litter. Mine don’t mind it at all; they don’t seem to prefer the other litters when given the choice between boxes.- Environmental issues. I simply don’t know how this compares with other option. I have personal objections to corn subsidies, and wheat is problematic on several levels. I don’t know enough about the Oko production process to evaluate its impact on the environment, sustainability, or any potential hazards to pets or humans during its creation or use.Cons:- Tracking, tracking, tracking. It’s not a particularly trackable litter, ironically; the problem is that whatever does track consists of large particles that are highly visible and painful to bare feet (and believe me, you don’t want the stuff anywhere near your bed). Since I’m not presently using the long-haired breed version, I find a lot of it sticking to my long-haired cat’s backside. I recently ordered a box of the long-haired version and will review it later.- Scooping. You may need to replace your litter scoop. The particles are too large to go through the fine scoops that normally work well w/clumping litters. Conclusion: I’ve tried other wood-based litters, and this is far and away the best of the lot. In terms of odor control, weight, dust, and economics, this is one of the best of ANY litters on the market. It could be better, but I’m still giving it five stars because I think it’s that much better than everything else I’ve tried.Oh—and alas, I did NOT receive this product free, so this really is an unbiased review.

The media could not be loaded.  This smells great, like fresh cut wood. But know that it is not “scented”. While cleaning you smell the waste you are cleaning but when buried, the litter box contains the scent. Ours is in the basement so I can’t rate this for living space use, but we detected no smell when playing pool in the basement. It has good absorbency, but is a bit tougher to clean (as seen in the video). Definitely need to get a large hole scooper! Otherwise it is a great alternative to heavy, dusty, and wasteful clay based litter.

This review is for the soft step oko cat litter with the pink stripe. One of my cats has sensitive paws, and he insists upon very soft cat litter. Let me begin by saying I have tried MANY different kinds of litter for him, so I am qualified to rate this one. The number one benefit of this cat litter is that it is very ECONOMICAL. It lasts a long time. I was frustrated with clay litters and the giant clumps they made. It seemed wasteful and I felt like I had to buy another box of litter every time I turned around. This litter lasts longer than any other litter I’ve ever used. I have two cats, two litter boxes, and the medium sized oko cat lasts more than 6 weeks. I believe that it because it is highly absorbent and doesn’t clump so hard.I will agree with other reviews that it does track a lot. It’s a very light litter, but I have found a solution for that. My cats’ litter boxes are in the basement. I have basic shag carpet remnants by their boxes down there, which catch a lot of the litter. At the top of the stairs, I placed a basic soft bath mat, and believe it or not, the bath mat does an amazing job. The light litter pieces stick to it so that they are no longer tracked through the house. So I recommend a soft bath mat, rather than the mats designed to trap litter. I also agree that it does not clump solidly, but I think that is part of the reason why it is not so wasteful. It’s really only a problem if you try to scoop it right after a kitty piddles in there. You have to let it sit for a while, then it’s fine. I appreciate that it is completely unscented. I think it does a decent job of odor control with it’s natural woodiness. I’ve been using this for my cats for several months and I have to say I do not miss lugging heavy clay litter boxes home from the store all the time.

I love this litter so much that I’ve thought about what I will do if they ever stop making it: forage for select timber, buy a wood chipper, and spend my weekends grinding the chips to the correct softness for my cat’s discerning paws. You might think I’m joking. I’m not. If you have a cat like mine, you know that one change to their litter can send them dropping protest bombs in all corners of your home. My cat is sensitive to smells, the size of the litter pellets or grains (presumably having a preference for how they feel under her paws), and she loves this litter.I love this litter because it DOES NOT SMELL and leaves NO dust. None. I became a reluctant cat owner over 10 years ago, and I couldn’t handle the smell of clean litter. The scented litters, and even some of the “unscented” litters – ones that were more “natural” and supposed to smell like cedar or baking soda – stunk to me. I have tried every brand offered in the big box stores and even tried some unique litter systems that used reusable pellets. The Oko cat litter is the only litter that doesn’t emit an odor that bothers me or my cat. the medium sized pellets don’t bother my cat’s paws, either. Also, I have never once smelled an overpowering odor after my cat has used the litter box. I do clean the litter box once a day and clean out the box fully about every four weeks. However, in ten years, this is the only litter that I have used that enables me to keep a litter box right by the front door. Before, I was always worried that the smell of clean (or unclean) litter would immediately assault friends and family and the dust would collect on the floor, so the litter box lived as far away from where company would be in my home. I don’t have those concerns any more. This litter is really great, and I know it probably won’t work for every cat, but it certainly works for mine.

I am new to the whole being owned by a cat thing and what I was most nervous about before bringing her home was the litter box because ew. After EXTENSIVE research on the subject I knew I didn’t want it to smell like AT ALL, I didn’t want it to track and I wanted it to be super earth friendly. I was so infatuated with it being earth friendly that I have spent an absolutely embarrassing amount of money on testing every.single.product that is not clay on the market (even subscription online litters, but also no walnut litters because my niece is allergic) over the past 3 months. I have given up on no tracking (I have a great vacuum after all), switching to a top entry litter box has helped on that quite a bit but it just happens. BUT I am just making this post to say OKOCAT OKOCAT OKOCAT (but not the less tracking kind because they can’t bury anything in it and that is odor city). It can be as cheap as $9 a month. It smells vaguely like a cedar chest only when you are actively cleaning it, and you can just dump it in your garden when you are done with it. Also note that I clean the litter boxes once a day so if you are lazy and do it less I can’t comment on it’s odor control. I know this is a weird, LONG, out of character post for me, but I was at my wit’s end and if I can save just one person from the pain of trying everything on the market here you go. Okocat. The end.
