Comes optimized for Netflix, but can download apps for every streaming service including Youtube, Chromecast, Prime, Hulu, Vudu, Disney, etc. Runs on Android OS, so is very tailorable to show favorites and load custom apps. Can connect to internet via ethernet RJ-45 connection or Wi-Fi. 4K UHD HDMI plug output. Streamed an Amazon Prime movie in UHD and it looked good, but it’s hard to know actual resolution you are getting because the streaming services adjust it down to accommodate network congestion and also to save money/energy at their server farms. Streamed a movie with the Shield linked to my cellphone hotspot and it played smoothly. Remote does not allow control of TV or volume. Has Alexa voice capability, but we figured out how to disable it after some searching (it’s under voice settings, not Alexa settings).

Finally.  I’ve waited for this device for years.  Every time Apple or Amazon or Roku release a new device I cross my fingers it checks all the boxes, and they never have, not even past Nvidia devices – until now.  There is always one feature missing, at least. The new Nvidia Shield finally solves the problems that kept them, In my opinion, from making it the perfect streaming box until now.The primary issues I always had with the previous versions have finally been fixed.I’m not going to review the software… you either like Android TV or not, I don’t feel like I need to get into that.  This is simply about the hardware. The number one thing, the remote.  My goodness, why did it take so long for someone to make a good remote for a set top box?  The Apple TV remote is easily the worst that has ever been made, and while others make usable remotes they still aren’t great.  Nvidia gets the remote right here, really right.  While at first glance the triangle design may seem odd, once you hold it in your hand you realize the benefit of this shape.  It feels really good in the hand.  It’s comfortable to hold.  It’s hefty and feels well made without being too heavy.  The button feel is really nice.  The back-light is fantastic.  And, finally, power and volume buttons which didn’t even take any setup to get working on my LG OLED and Sonos Playbar.  It just worked.  It’s a GREAT remote and if you’re just using a TV and the Shield it’s the only remote you will need.  It has CEC of course, you can use your TV remote… if you really wanted too…Secondly, they finally added Dolby Vision.  Why on earth did this take so long???  For whatever reason, it’s finally here.  FINALLY.I was always a fan of the previous Shield but stopped using it a couple of years ago.  The incredibly stupid remote and lack of Dolby Vision kept it collecting dust in my closet even though I liked the speed and features.  The old Android interface was never great either but since the past few updates to Android TV it’s now pretty good.    And finally, the form factor.  Man, what a stupid looking device until now.  It’s like a bunch of people got together and asked themselves how they could design the most ridiculous thing to sit under a TV.  The ‘pro’ version still looks the same, but the smaller version is finally something sensible.  Like the remote at first glance it may look a bit silly… but if you think about it, and use it, it’s a genius form factor.  Rather than a stick or a dongle or something that needs to hang down, sit under, stick out, be mounted etc., it’s perfectly designed to plug into your HDMI on one end and power on the other, and hang perfectly behind your TV.  It’s really smart design, just like the remote.  I predict you’re going to see companies following this design… once you see it you think ‘why didn’t someone do this before???’.  It just makes sense.  It just works.Everything about the new Shield looks like a gimmick.  The odd shape of the device, the odd shape of the remote.  It’s not.  They actually made something that makes sense and is very nice to use.  Finally, someone has.

I’ve owned several android boxes over the years. This is so much better than any of them. Streams flawlessly where others I had had minor little issues from the beginning that progressed into big issues as time went on. One of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time. I’ll be ordering more for additional TVs.

-Fast, cant beat the speed of Nvidias box. I’ve probably had about 20 diffrent boxes and by far Nvidia Shield is the fastest, this version just make the experiencethat much better.-New remote is great. Easy push responseis fast, not sure if theres an air mouse feature but in either case the remote is a great addition.-Steaming seems to be just as good as before tho I really never had an issue other then where the stream was from.-The SD card slot is a little tough to access due to the compact design but works fine.-Great inline design no more worries about where to put it.- wall plug is more slim line much easier to store and use with multi plugAll in all nice upgrade for the price hope it hold up as well as the previous versions

8/23/20 Just got the item and installed. Everything works ok except VUDU? What’s the deal? I have a UHD Samsung 40″ and it will not open any movie UHD or HDX.8/25/20: Patience..patience: Be sure to upgrade software…will solve problems. That’s what happened with the Nvidia Shield. All my initial concerns were addressed and solved. Everything is working perfectly, so far.I am not a gamer. I purchased this after purchasing and being disappointed with both the Roku Ultra and the Firestick 4K. I wanted my VUDU with UHD (no go with Firestick 4K) and HBO Max, with both Firestick and Roku not providing. So I spent the extra bucks on the Nvidia Shield and it was well worth it.The design and performance of the Shield is outstanding. I chose to use ethernet thru powerline adapters. The 4K clarity and the AI upscaling are great! Streaming services don’t take forever to load compared to Roku and Firestick. It was a quick and easy setup (outside of my initial flub for not updating the software). The remote’s design is perfect for not losing it in the couch cushions. Firestick’s remote’s design doesn’t help in that dep’t.Shield Bluetooth paired quickly with my headphones and it has volume control which Firestick 4K does not have.Well worth the investment.

I have the shield pro – I was looking for a box for the extra room I’ve tried buzz TV nah I have tried tons of boxes nah didn’t work out so well so I just decided to get the little shield and guess what it’s just as good as the big boy I know it cost more than most boxes but you get what you pay for trust me and believe me when I tell you that I’ve probably been through 30 boxes – once you have any of the shields you have nothing left to worry about you have the best of the best and it will perform like the best . Good luck 👍

I got the Tv version yesterday and set everything up. I am using it with a hisense 65h9f tv. The Tv came with android Tv built in and it more then kinda sucks, functional but slow and sloppy. Got the Tv back in February. The sheild tv makes all the difference in the world, very happy with it. The tv it self as a monitor is amazing. The android tv aspect of it, well the only nice thing I can say about it is, it works. Which is why I got this. At 1st I was looking at generic android boxes and am very happy I spent a little more on this. I wanted the pro version but scalpers are buying them up and price gouging them up to ridiculous prices. Hence the lesser purchase.I got the same app that disables the bixby button on samsung phones to take care of the netflix button. I don’t use netflix and the button is far to easy to accidentally touch which boots you out of what you are doing and opens netflix. Not really a big deal but the potential to be very annoying much like the hated bixby button. I am mostly going to use the shield for streaming and for that 32 bit should be fine. I just wont be able to update the apps after google forces the app store over to 64bit at the end of the year. The other thing I’m using the shield for is emulation (retroarch and bigbox as a front end). Ran some tests and it seems to emulate everything up to N64 including ps1 and mame just fine. For general purpose modern gaming I have a very long HDMI cable running from my desktop computer along with cheap bluetooth mouse and keyboard. So that the tv functions like a giant monitor and it’s amazing. For emulating dreamcast, gamecube, wii and psp and ps2 and above just run that off the computer that’s connected via HDMI. I know I could chrome cast it and there are other options built into the shield but I had already hard wired the tv and computer when I first got the tv. No reason to change it out since it works very, very, very well. The Tv came with a boat load of HDMI and bluetooth ports. So I don’t have to change out the cables. I also tried Geforce Now with a few steam games from my library and the freebies that come with the unit and they ran fine.Since the Shield Tv doesn’t have any usb ports I added a 256gig sd card as extended memory no fuss no muss. When sd cards come down in price I just add a larger one.I am wonderfully happy with this setup. Between the TV, computer and shield tv the gaming set up I have is beyond description. On top of that I there is an infinite amount of streaming available with apps like youtube, kodi pbs, slingTv, ect, ect, ect. I’m good for the next 2 years of quarantine. I’m astounded.

I have the tube style Nvidia Shield Tv, originally when I saw this new style I was nonplussed by it, but the more I read about the Tegra chip and the new remote control style and the resolution upscaling to near 4K on video below 60 hz framerate I was sold on trying it. There’s a ton of video on the internet that is 24 and 30 hz especially on youtube, and this thing really works on sharpening up the display on lower resolution. I use it with ethernet, no problems at all with 4K, HDR formats except HDR10+ which is covered by Dolby Vision. The Android user interface is quite snappy and enjoyable, I especially like the remote, it has a motion activated backlight for night time use and a voice search button. All in all it is almost a perfect device, if you are a heavy gamer you will want the rectangular style Shield.
