Fills out a kit with the 14-30 S lens very well. Or as a single lens when traveling it was great for grand kid pictures

Prior to my trip in Europe, I used this lens on my Nikon Z6 in all types of lighting conditions and environments in New Mexico. I’m happy with its performance, and it’s my go-to lens at the moment. I’m not disappointed in my choice.

I am relatively new to photography having done a significant amount of research into the technology to support my hobby. Spent months considering full-frame, APS-C, Brand, SLR/Mirrorless etc. and ultimately ended up with the Nikon Z camera. I’m an enthusiast and pretty much now always use the camera on Manual to take control over the picture and have spent a lot of time understanding all of the key metrics involved in photography – big shout-out to Jared Polin.I know that primes and f2.8 lenses are considered professional and do have the 85mm and 35mm Z lenses for the camera in addition to the great kit lens 24-70 f4. I also had the F mount 70-200 f4 but with the adapter found it cumbersome and quite noisy when trying to focus. This lens isn’t designated as ‘S’ line and is there not considered anywhere close to the quality of the 70-200 f2.8 or 24-70 f2.8 but is also considerably cheaper at only 20% of the cost of the other two combined. I watched many reviews on YouTube and online and decided to take the plunge and buy the lens. After using the lens now for a month or so I have to say I’m very impressed. Does it have the same level of quality and control as the larger f2.8’s? No, and it’s much slower. But the reason I bought the Z system is the VR, the stop reduction afforded by the VR and the quality of the sensor so the real-world difference to me is great. I’m no pixel peeper and don’t have the considerably more expensive f2.8’s to compare to – all that is done online by multiple reviewers but I have to admit I’ve not taken this lens off the camera since buying it.Long story short – this is a keeper and despite the lack of the ‘S’ designation and the fact it’s quite slow as soon as you get beyond 30mm, the pictures are excellent. I’ve not had any major issues with light and so this lens is an absolute great all-rounder. Even if Nikon would build my wish-list lens of a z70-200 f4, coupled with my included z24-70 I’d probably still leave this lens on most of the time. Just so easy to grab and go with a great size and practicality.

The wait was well-worth it for this highly-sought-after Z telephoto lens. Everything you read in the reviews is spot on. It’s super-sharp with imperceptible softening at the edges wide open (only if you pixel peep). This is not a constant aperture lens, and it steps down pretty quickly. But I still had no problems with rapid autofocus even in lower-light conditions.Combine with a size and weight that aren’t much greater, and my F4 Z 24-70mm is not even in the bag anymore.

I have been looking for a lens to replace the f-mount F/4 24-120 Nikon with the F to Z adapter. This lens is much lighter than the previous combination I was using on my Nikon Z6. It also makes it much easier for me to carry it around with my anywhere daily or when traveling. I took some photos today, zoomed in all the way at 200MM and the details of an exterior of a building is amazing. I don’t mind the smaller aperture at the end of the zoom since I’m mainly shooting architecture (buildings, skyscrapers) and urban/nature landscapes.

I ordered in February as soon as I heard that preorders were being taken. Then COVID. Amazon indicated several times since then an estimated delivery date that always came and went, leaving me disappointed. Last week I saw another ETA and only sorta believed it. Today the lens finally arrived.I have put it on a Z50, z6 and Z7 already. This lens was worth the wait. Its small, sharp, and exactly what I wanted to cover a wide range when I don’t want to have to change lenses. Yes, its a bit slow, but I knew that before ordering. Nikon’s mirrorless cameras tolerate high ISO, so the slow aperture wont be much of an issue. The VR when I put on the Z50 seems rock-solid and locks images in and eliminates shake even through the view finder.I rate it 9/10 – it would be a 10 if it stayed at f/4 all the way out to 200mm

This replaces a non-Nikon 28-300mm general purpose lens, and surpasses it in every way. I miss the 300mm range but appreciate the wider 24mm end as well which is more useful in close quarters. I also own Nikon’s 24-70mm and echo the opinion of many reviewers that this is just as sharp – which is pretty sharp indeed. It may be a tad softer round the edges wide open but honestly its more academic that a factor in the real world. Yes it goes to f6.3 pretty quickly in the zoom range, but with today’s cameras you can up your ISO a lot without getting too noisy. It has minimal to insignificant distortion and CA is also kept well under control. When used on the 45.7MP sensor of the Z7/ Z72 you also have plenty of room for cropping, thus utilizing the best part of the lens, and makes it very useful for birds, insects and general close up work. I have yet to try it for portraits but have any confidence it will shine there too.I shoot professionally, and have several prime and top grade lenses to compare it to. I have been really impressed with the 24-200mm’s performance. While it might not be as absolutely as sharp as some of them it is not too far off, and for an all purpose lens it makes far less compromises that you would expect. The enclosed shot is a moderate crop from about 150mm and has a nice bokeh as well.

When I first bought this lens back in November, I thought that I would use it and return it if it didn’t suit my needs (that time I had until January 31, 2022 to return). I brought the lens and my Z6 for a trip to Barcelona in November. I also brought my 14-30 F/4 Z lens for a wider angle. In the 10 days that I was there the lens that was on my camera 99% of the time was the 24-200mm. The lens was so versatile that I didn’t bother switching and it was a bliss to be able to zoom from 24 mm to 200 mm in mere fraction of a second! I was totally impressed with the lightness and quality of the build of this lens. When I returned home and examined all the 800 shots I made I was also impressed with the sharpness of the image both center and close to the borders. The color rendition was fantastic. I would highly recommend this lens for travels as well as for hiking or if you want to carry only one lens.

Although this is a variable aperture lens it is well rounded for my travel lens. I keep this lens on my Z5, since I can grab the camera and get the shot. I know it is not f2.8 or f4 but the zoom on it is very good and I can adjust to ensure I am getting my exposure correct. Focus is good and focus speed is acceptable. The best part of this lens is the 24-200 and the price. Yes, I know it is not the S-Line but I still really enjoy the lens.

I love the versatility of this lens for landscape and some close up (but not macro) photography. I am a photography enthusiast and it (mostly) meets my needs (still looking for a solution for macro photography but it is not my main subject so it’s not super important to be a macro lens – it is also not advertised as a macro lens, so I knew it might not be ideal. I can “work around” the macro by starting at a further focal distance and cropping/zooming more in post production. I do wish there was a z lens that had a greater reach – 400 mm would be great. I suppose I will end up buying a second lens in the future but this is a great “walk around” lens.
