FATHER STU, starring Mark Wahlberg, is based on the true-life story of a boxer who after a near-fatal accident changes his life’s path.

Father StuFather Stu

Based on a true story, Father Stu is an unflinchingly honest, funny and uplifting story about finding purpose in a most unexpected place. After surviving a terrible motorcycle accident, Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) wonders if he can use his second chance to help others find their way — and leads this former amateur boxer to the surprising realization that he is meant to be a priest. Despite a devastating health crisis and the skepticism of Church officials and his estranged parents (Mel Gibson and Jacki Weaver), Stu pursues his vocation with courage and compassion, inspiring not only those closest to him but countless others along the way.

This is a very inspiring film that is well filmed, well scripted, and propelled by Wahlberg’s endearing portrayal of the main character. The storyline is something of the classic hero’s journey, with an unlikely hero — which resolves in paradox that is so often seen in transformation (Richard Rohr). There is some insider Catholic humor sprinkled in, and just as many misadventures that will be familiar to those of us in the recovery community. That all said, it is a good inspiring film for anyone of any denomination and wellness status and maybe just looking for a story that keeps you fueled up for your own life journey, whatever that may be for you. Some sanctimonious cynics are already bashing the film and Wahlberg, and that’s not a surprising reaction to a gritty “real life” gut-check story about alternating faith and doubt that is probably something that more of us know about than those sanctimonious cynics anyway. Geez…it’s OK to be inspired, encouraged…and after all, you should be! You are worthy! Enjoy the film and think about your own doubt, faith, and that you may be loved more than you ever understood yourself to be. Enjoy it! Peace and Good!

What do I mean? I bought the DVD and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. From everything I’ve heard of it, I can’t wait to watch it. For instance, Bishop Barron wrote an article in which he claims this is an “unlikely story.” Yet, he says, “is one of the most theologically interesting films to come out in a long time. It considers some of the thorniest and most puzzling themes in the sacred science, including the nature of vocation, the purpose of suffering in the divine plan, the role of supernatural agency, the dynamics of redemption, and perhaps most thoroughly, the mystery of God’s providence.” How can that not be interesting? That’s more than a mouthful, especially from his experience as a priest, now Bishop. I eagerly look forward to being able to add my own two-cents to this. Until then, I’m riding on the shoulders of another, another for whom I have a great deal of respect.

An excellent film showing a rough around the edges man who was shown a better path in life and still chose to keep going despite his illness. It’s a refreshing change of pace to have a true story that uplifts it’s viewers and celebrates faith. Well worth watching.

Intelligent true story of a troubled but likeable man who becomes a Catholic priest. Unlike many Christian movies, this film is realistic and respects the faith. Some graphic language. Highly recommended!

My husband and I enjoyed this movie very much as it shares similar perspective with our own lives. After our own destructive youths, we were humbled greatly in our 30s. I can’t thank my disease enough for squashing my pride! We knew for soo long what it felt to be empty inside and searching for the next thing to satisfy desires but Jesus offers fullness, peace and joy to fill us up completely. We love this movie and can’t wait to purchase it to share it others. Thank you Mark and Mel for your courage and truth during such dishonest times. It is refreshing.

Sony blacked out this movie in theaters with less than 10 screens. Our local theater only has 8 screens. The next closest theater is $50 away by gas.

Incredibly good and very touching movie….and I’m not even a Christian. It brought tears to my eyes. Father Stu is a true story of courageous faith in the face of pain and suffering. It’s about how a person can change for the better…and how strength can be found in brokenness. Father Stu is an example to us all. Just pre-ordered the DVD. This movie is a keeper.

Marky Mark did a great job in this entertaining movie. The movie has a lot of heart to it and takes the subject matter serious. There is a lot of adult subject matter so be warned. But don’t let that stop you from watching the movie.
