  • Radon gas is odorless, colorless, tasteless, radioactive, according to EPA, it kills 21,000+ people in the US. Amongst non-smokers, radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer.
  • Just because your current radon gas results are below acceptable levels, this does not mean they will always remain at those levels. Radon gas levels fluctuate by hour, day, month, and over seasons. That is why accurate long-term continuous monitoring is very critical.

Just bought a ‘new’ 82 year old house with a basement and was concerned with how much radon is actually present. I wasn’t really too encouraged that modern practices are still using an absorber test kit that needs to be sent away. Why can’t I know immediately? Now you can.You just plug this in and leave it. It’s got a very nice vacuum florescent display on top that very clearly states what the value of radon is AND it records all of the readings on an hourly basis. I can see the fluctuations over time. The seller allowed me to put this device in during the month we closed so now I have 30 days worth of recorded data of an undisturbed and vacant house, 10 days worth of data when we moved in with normal living, and now how much radon is present after I installed a radon mitigator. All that without spending $130+ per 2-3 day radon test. The logs are saved in the device and you can download it anytime you log into it. The phone app is very straight forward and you log into it via bluetooth. If you need to remotely monitor then you’d have to drum up a solution to capture bluetooth data and pipe it out. That’s not my case so this device is perfect for me and my home.I’ve got a couple of other air sensors which require access to the interweb and when it drops out it stops recording. Not the RD200. It doesn’t care if you look at it or not…it just keeps logging. When you download the log, it saves as a parenthesis deliminated .txt file. You could easily pull it into excel but I haven’t tried yet.Accuracy?: The measurement made by the home inspection averaged 3.5 pCi/l (the acceptable maximum is 4.0 pCi/l). The RD200 shows around 3.3 before we moved in, fluctuated between 1.0-4.5 as I started bricking up a hidden window, to a stead average of 1.1 post mitigator. I haven’t compared the measurements saved in the log file with the exact dates of the professional radon test but it appears to be within reason. They’re two different test types. What I get is trend data. You can see the three main periods in the attached image (pre-move in, post move-in, post radon mitigator). There was a sale on this device which was about 20% off after I bought it. Amazon doesn’t price match itself. This is probably the most important sensor in the house so I don’t necessarily mind.Buy it!

If you are house shopping this could save you a lot of money. We were moving to an area where high radon levels were more common due to the region’s geography. We’d take this with us on home tours and plug it in to get an idea of radon levels in each home we were considering. It was much cheaper than ordering radon inspections. Plus, we can take it to our families homes and check radon levels for them so we can rest easier knowing that they are safe in that respect.

Did a lot of research on Amazon before buying this device. I formally had the carbon short-term test done to my home office in the basement. The results came back 1.6 and 3.9 next to the sump pump. Measured this in summer and the numbers were already borderline for mitigation. I just couldn’t imagine what the readings would be like in winter. Since I spend 8-10 hours a day in the basement, I thought it would be a worthwhile investment to purchase this. I am not disappointed. Provided readings within 10 minutes. It peaked around 4.5. I was able to measure the affect of the air composition when I opened the basement windows. After several hours the radon levels went down to 0. So opening the windows does actually help. Thanks to this fast response device, I will move my home office upstairs to avoid further exposure. I will continue to open the windows daily before we install a permanent mitigation solution.I really like the fact that it stores up to one year of data to measure both the mid term and long term averages. I can see the data points on my phone for the hourly average. Setting it up was really easy, just plug it into the wall and download the app (optional). No pairing required, it just picked up the device. As for shipping, it was fast and came within 2 days.

The Radon Eye RD200 has been operating for 58 days and performs as per product specifications. Communication with our iPhone is effortless and transfer of data to the iPhone works as explained in the instructions. Transfer of files to a computer (Mac) works well as explained by Bruce K. in a blog I found on the Web:Plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC and run iTunes. In iTunes click on the icon for your device.Under ‘Settings’ you’ll see ‘File Sharing’.Click on that and then under Apps look for RadonEye App and hit that. You’ll get a list of RadonEye documents.Select one or all of the files that you can drag-n-drop onto your desktop or into a folder. These are just text files that will open with Notepad or Word on a PC.Also, you can grab the data from the open text file and copy into an Excel spreadsheet to chart it nicely.Susan D.

Helps me monitor my levels in my basement during our remodel. Allows me to set an alarm at my preferred level (currently higher then normal while we in the midst of remediation).I can’t speak for the accuracy, but it fluctuates constantly and pairs well with a home radon test kit being used by our remediation company. The app uses Bluetooth and needs to access certain areas of your phone in order to save data “if you want it to”. But once my radon levels are normal for an extended period, I’ll remove the app as it will have served its purpose.Highly recommend.

People who are giving this product a one star provide reasons that are misleading. I have purchased 4 of these units, and I have compared them all next to $5,000+ professional Radon testing equipment. I have a unique perspective because my brother is a home inspector in Southwest Colorado. You should NEVER compare readings from this unit to other consumer-available testing equipment to reach a “reviewable” conclusion for the Amazon community. If you purchase this product and think the reading are askew then start calling Radon remediation companies in your area. I have yet to find a region of the United States where I have been turned down by a remediation company for a free 24-72 hour test in which you can test this device’s readings. They all want the business if your results are high…I am not saying this company may send a bad apple or two that was calibrated improperly but the four I purchased had no such issue. I imagine if you receive one with questionable results and provide a professional’s test along with the RD200’s results, and they are completely different, Amazon or the seller would replace the device.I have tested Airthings, charcoal kits, other digital consumer measurement devices and NOTHING comes close to the accuracy of this unit.Again, I have no interest or receive no benefit by submitting this review, but people should not put their health at risk by buying a subpar consumer measurement device due to the absurd one star reviewers.

After much consideration, I decided on this unit over the other options that are available. I’m glad I did. This is truly a precision instrument that can give quick, accurate results as well as charting long term trends. We had a radon system installed in our house before we bought it earlier this year and I always wondered how well it was doing and if I really need to pay to have the fan running all the time. We’re also trying to sell a house up in the mountains and was wanting to be proactive about the radon (so it wouldn’t be a flag on the inspection). That’s one of the reasons I liked this unit as it can give a reading within an hour. Since we are only up there to mow and maintain I wanted to get a reading while I was there. It immediately indicated a high reading…My next trip up there was about 8 days later. My first time to try the bluetooth download of the acquired data. Wow – was I shocked to see a peak reading above 40! Glad I wasn’t puttering in the basement there that day (although we lived there for 4 years never thinking much about radon). Since the chart in the phone only shows hours I downloaded it to Excel and figured out how to convert it to dates using a formula. If you’re interested, it’s pretty easy to do. The data number is how may hours and the date on the file would be the last hour. Copy the data into a spreadsheet, remove the header rows and replace column 1 with this formula: =DATE(2018,10,3)-((497-ROW())/24) {where the date is the file save date and the 497 is whatever your data number is}. Make a line chart and you’ll have what I pictured. Anyway, this told me that the peak I observed happened on Sept 16 – the date that hurricane Florence passed over our area. Well, there you go!I’ve since observed the ebb and flow of radon overnight in our house here. There are times even with the radon system installed that the level rises above the 4 threshold so I’ve experienced the warning beeps. Well done, it certainly lets you know but it only alerts for about 1 min every hour or so (don’t know the exact timing). I’m also surprised how even opening a window just a little bit lowers the radon level extremely fast.Last comment about radon. I looked at the professional report from the remediator (we had a system installed in the mountain house) and it showed a period where the radon was 7 or 8 but only for a few hours. That is still considered passing since the average over 2 days was below the threshold. So this little instrument is still a good thing to have even if you have a remediation system installed as there will be times you should open a window if you are going to be in the basement.

The media could not be loaded. The Radon Eye has worked well for me over the 3 weeks that I have had the product. Both the LED display and phone app provide useful data. The logged data is especially useful to observe radon level trends. While the logged data can be displayed in the app being able to transfer the logged data to a computer and to import it into Excel is nice as it allows you to manipulate and process the data however you like. The fast response time of this product allows for meaningful readings of short term variations of radon levels. The Radon Eye’s current reading on the LED display and logged data points are rolling 1-hour average values. The other radon meter I have used (Pro Series 3) requires 48 hours of data to provide an accurate reading and it only displays 1 week averages for its short term output. That long averaging period makes the Pro3 less useful in correlating events that cause rises and falls in radon levels. The one week average values from the Pro3 appear to track reasonably well with the 1 week averages from the Radon Eye. I have observed that short term variations are strongly tied to weather conditions. Cold/cool mornings and rainy periods appear to correlate to significant rises in radon levels. I have only used the product in one location so far (living room), but may relocate it once a longer period of data collection has occurred.

Bought house in Aug 2021. Over 40 years, it’s the first house I’ve owned that caused instinctive concern about radon gas in its unfinished basement, that includes some exposed granite ledge. The prior home owner who sold us this house had “no knowledge” and inspections are routinely waived in the bidding fests that rule the Boston area home sale market. Unlike lead and asbestos, radon CAN be an problem in houses built over recent most 40 years.I procured a $15 mail-in test kit and did the 48 hour test in sealed basement. Result from lab came back 6 pCi/L. Above EPA limit… meaning “Do something”.Do I buy more kits to get a running idea how much of a problem this is? What happens if window or door open? What happens when boiler “breaths away” basement air? What happens on low barometric pressure conditions (storms)? I could imagine buying lots of kits before this story was fully understood.Instead, I bought the Radon Eye. It’s a sentinel that watches radon every hour of the day and keeps a deep, non-volatile log of these readings. It has been a hell of a good investment. What I found: * Under same conditions of the mail-in kit, it got readings in the 6-7 pCi/L range. That’s exact agreement with the lab test. So far, so good. Indeed, my sealed basement is not healthy (> 4 pCi/L) * When any window or door is left slightly open, RadonEye readings consistently drop to < 2 pCi/L. Very safe. (It's worth a mention that there's a boiler in the basement that operates intermittently all year, summer included, as it maintains the hot water tank's temperature. The boiler ingests basement air, thus providing some rate of purging radon gas. I suspect this has a limiting effect on how high radon concentration might get, but does not restrain it from being at a danger level. ) * When we had a horrible nor'easter and power was down 2 days, it took no readings. But it retained all data from prior to that (ie logging to non volatile memory) * In a subsequent storm, power stayed on, and readings went up in the 11-12 pCi/L range. It's a logical outcome because radon would seep in faster when pressure is low. * I have developed 100% confidence in this instrument. It can't be fooled. If I crack a basement window, radon readings go down within a couple hours. Seal it up and they return to the 5-8 range over the ensuing 8 hours.I attached a chart of its data from two contiguous weeks. Every feature of the chart conforms to the circumstances that I know were at hand. RadonEye comes at a low price to pay for confidently knowing the exact extent of my radon problem. It showed me that just cracking the window suffices to keep radon at healthy limits. While that's okay for summer, it's not an option in winter. I have a workshop in the basement where I'll spend time all seasons. It can't be a walk-in freezer down there.Bottom line: I am hiring a foundation expert to seal up inlets and install a sub-slab vacuum. The data from RadonEye instills confidence that making a not-so-welcome $2K to $4K expense of this kind has merits. And don't think I won't rely on RadonEye to keep watch and ensure I get what I pay for once the remediation is in place. The techy part: Other reviewers mention data readout format when charting radon over time. (no date/time with each hourly reading). That can be dealt with in Excel with some know how of macros. Not a big deal to me. I chose RadonEye (Bluetooth interface) over the the Wifi product because I felt it was more likely my home's radon readings would end up known only to me. The Bluetooth feature and app works without a hitch on my Android phone. Even my non-techy wife has consented that this was a truly valuable acquisition for us.

We bought a house and discovered we have a radon problem using a Corentium radon detector we bought on Amazon. It works fine, but only gives a near term reading and a 7 day average reading, and it takes a full day before giving results. Based on the Corentium detector we hired a radon mitigation contractor who installed the typical plumbing and fan, and using his own detector, he measured safe results and declared victory.Enter Radon Eye. We put this device in the living area where we would spend time, and quickly discovered that the levels were way above the readings the contractor had found. When we confronted him, we learned he had put his meter in a different location, and since we wanted all the rooms to be safe we had him do additional work, after which we put his detector side by side with our Radon Eye. Both produced the same results and we found that his work did not get the job done. We would have been exposed to very unsafe levels (over 20) if we had just trusted him the first time around. This is a reminder that “ignorance is NOT bliss”.He came back several times and tried different things, and none were successful. So after “investing” over $2000 in someone who was not an expert, we searched for and found someone who runs his own company and is an expert. Whereas our original contractor would send in his laborers and stop in occasionally to tell them what to do and then leave, the second gentleman spent half a day with us, discovered that the work done by the previous contractor was incomplete and totally inadequate, redid it, and now our radon levels are well within the safe range.Had it not been for our Radon Eye and the capability it provided to fully verify and document results, we would have been exposed for long periods to very unsafe radon levels. So, needless to say, we love our Radon Eye detector. It works perfectly, requires no attention or maintenance, and it gives a reading very quickly. Moreover, the graphical presentation in my phone or tablet makes it very easy to verify that the radon level is staying at safe levels. It is not a stretch to declare that this device has saved lives.
