This was a big purchase for me. I have never owned a portable AC, and I didn’t know what to expect. Reviews ranged from adoration, to loathsome, and I was nervous when I clicked the confirm order button. Let me assure you who are reading this that this was probably my highest rated purchases on amazon. My living condition is an upstairs loft in SoCal. It is a small, studio-sized room with a bathroom. The temperature, untreated, would reach up to 89 degrees inside. I was in desperate need for relief, but still hesitated at the idea of this machine. I was afraid I would be getting a loud, unruly, ineffective appliance that would plague my days to come. All these fears were blown away by the crisp, cool air this thing pumps out on the regular.Shipping — Timely, and damage free.Instructions — Clear and easySetup — Window installation may take some patience, but with minimal effort, it can be done in no time. (Remote even came with batteries included!)Cleaning — I have not had to drain the reservoir or vacuum the filter for months now, but I could do so easily. (Shouldn’t put it off, I should say)Sound Level — If you keep it next to your bed, the sound could prove to be a hindrance, after hours. However, I keep mine at the window opposite my bed, and it still keeps the whole room cool, while I sleep in peace with barely a hum to be heard. Speaking of which…Sleep Mode — This mode lowers the set temperature by 1 degree every hour. After 6 hours it returns to normal settings. (The lights even dim on the display! I like my room dark when I sleep, so this tiny feature was noticed, and appreciated. Commendable design feature.)Separate Modes — Fan Mode: This mode turns the appliance into a normal household fan, with low / medium / high settings. (Again, the display is noteworthy for its easy-to-read level indicator.) Good for when you want to keep a cool room cool longer, and the output is impressive. Dehumidifier mode: I think this feature is great, but I haven’t used it much. Dry climate and all.Remote — can work in direct line-of-sight all the way across my room. Internal display is handy. Display is simple, so batteries last a long time. No issues.MAX Mode — This is when you need immediate relief. Fortunately, this appliance can dole it out at the push of a button. Max keeps the AC on no matter what with fan speed adjusting as needed. I cannot count the number of times I walk in from a long, hard day at work and immediately search for the max button on the remote before I even drop my pack. (As Emperor Palpatine would say, “Unlimited power!!!”)Timer — This feature is hands-down my favorite part of the whole deal. You can set the AC to come on, at a preset temperature, anywhere between 1 and 24 hours. MAGNIFICENT! I set the timer for 75 degrees and nine hours before I leave for work at 5 in the morning. When I get home after 2, the machine is on diligently bringing the temperature back down from the afternoon highs. This saves electricity (those wanting to save money) and by extension energy (for all those wanting to go green, of which I was one), and keeps the room cool when you actually need it to be cool, even if you left the house/apt. ALSO, the timer can be set to turn the AC off (1-24 hour interval again). This is perfect for sleep mode on average-temperature days, or when you leave in the middle of the day, and want it to turn off when the sun goes down. And the display (I really love the display) gives you a little blinking dot at the bottom corner of the screen to let you know for sure the timer is on; this is great for self-doubters like me. (ME: Did you get that AC? 9 hours, okay? AC: I got it, bro, no worries.)All in all, I have a total of ZERO complaints about this appliance. If you are shopping for a portable AC, and are nervous about the reviews you see on all the listings like I was, I whole-heartedly recommend this product for a worry-free buy.Black+Decker, you rock, and thanks!

I read the reviews, good and bad. And bought two units. Couldn’t be happier. We live in a rented house. The old central A/C finally died after many years of service, limping along with repeated maintenance over the final two years. The landlord relunctantly replaced the central A/C — with a used unit that doesn’t do the job. 88 degrees F outside, set the central A/C to 72, the house stays around 77-79. Hot.I bought two of these B+D units to make up the difference. One for the living room, one for the back bedroom. After a month, not only are we comfortably cool, but our power bill has dropped as well. Yes, it has.***********The units arrived in the standard heavy shipping packages that many other reviewers have mentioned. Fortunately the instructions indicating that the unit needed to be kept in an upright position for 24 hours before being turned on were clearly visible. In spite of what some other reviewers indicate: you can’t take it on faith that the shipping company kept the unit carefully upright for you during transit. The unit needs to sit for 24 hours before you try it out. This old house has crank windows. The included window mounting unit is useless for old crank windows. I went to the local Lowe’s in one case, Home Depot in another and bought “plastic cardboard” to fill the window. I cut the plastic to size to replace the window screens, then traced out and cut a hole in the plastic to the exact size of the oval connecter that comes with the unit. I replaced the window screen(s) with the plastic, and connected the hose, using weather tape around the plastic and around the oval hose connecter. For support on the hose connecter I added a stack of old books to help with the weight of the connecter. We have ledge windows. The books worked perfectly. The entire arrangement is covered by curtains anyway, so it doesn’t show. It does the job. And does it well. Then we turned the unit(s) on. The air is ice cold. The rooms are as cold as we want them to be. Plus the units serve to cool other parts of the house as well, not just the rooms they are in.Noise levels are no problem for us — we use white noise to drown outside noise anyway. I’ve always slept with a fan. I liked sitting under window A/C units when I was a kid in the 1960s. The noise doesn’t bother me — it’s a reminder of comfort and relaxation. I’d compare the noise level to the average motel room A/C unit. Which I like also.Outside of a central A/C unit, show me a unit — window or portable — that is truly silent. I’ve never seen or heard of one that doesn’t make noise. The remote works: does what it is supposed to do. I’d prefer the remote’s controller screen be backlit for visibility in the dark. That’s my only criticism. We’ll see if these units stand the test of time. So far: excellent. Five stars. I have no complaints.Frankly I don’t understand the negative reviews. Perhaps they didn’t take the “leave the unit standing for 24 hours” instruction seriously. Perhaps they thought they were buying a magic unit that doesn’t require a heat exhaust pipe. Or that someone had invented a portable A/C unit in this price range that runs in total silence. Here’s a hint: there is no such thing. It doesn’t exist. In the meantime, this unit is GREAT. It does precisely what it is advertised as doing. Will it last? I think that it will. Time will tell. For now I couldn’t be more pleased with what I bought.PS – I’m not rating some other features such as sleep mode/timer because I don’t use them.

I’ve been using it everyday, when it’s not summer I simply use the built in fan for air flow when I’m working and white noise when I’m sleeping. When it’s blazing hot during summer I have the unit blasting cool air in my home office while I’m working and when I am done for the day and want to chill outside of my office I can run my central air and save A LOT of money on my electric bill. This is an absolute must buy if you’re looking for some AC relief without breaking the bank. I will without a doubt buy a brand new one the moment this thing breaks down on me but it’s been going strong for 4 years now and I still can’t see it breaking anytime soon!ORIGINAL REVIEW:The central air in my house is broken and it would cost me nearly $7,000 to fix it so I decided to pass and buy this portable air conditioner and it gets the job done for a far less price. It’s only been a couple of days since I’ve used this thing and it’s been a LIFE SAVER. It gets up to 110F where I am and this ac unit cools down my room within minutes! I set it to turn off after 1 hour to save energy. I don’t expect this thing to cool down my entire living room but I always go to my room after work and I’m satisfied so far. My only complaints is the less than helpful instruction manual to set this up but you can get an idea on how to install this thing from YouTube, my other complaint is that it’s fairy loud but honestly the benefit far outweighs the cons so it gets 5 stars in my book. I’ll be sure to update my review if I encounter any problems, but as of now I’d highly recommend this unit if you want to beat the summer heat every year.UPDATE 08/19/18: It has been about 2 months since I’ve bought and used the unit now and I still stand by what I said about this device, it is a LIFE SAVER! My area has been consistently hot all summer with temperatures ranging from 99F – 107! And not once did I ever feel the summer heat indoors. This was definitely worth the purchase and is an amazing investment for future summers to come.UPDATE 05/17/21: It has been 3 years since I’ve owned this portable air conditioner and I firmly believe this is by far one of my greatest investments. It has reached upwards of 119 degrees where I live over the past 3 years of owning this AC unit and it’s been a LIFESAVER. I do not regret buying this and I can say with full confidence I would immediately buy a new one should this one fail; as things stand however, I don’t see it failing anytime soon!

A great buy!All the negative reviews saying it’s loud and doesn’t cool down their space are crazy and they should look into their insulation on their home. This thing is very quiet! And cools down our 800 sq foot one bedroom apartment quickly, and quietly! We got it on a day that was 107° outside and we set the temp to 74° in our livingroom that was about 80° when started and within about 30 minutes the entire apartment was much cooler, within an hour it was 75° in our bedroom and 73° in livingroom. The thermostat must be off a little but that’s no big deal.I just wish it had an option for the entire unit to turn off when it gets to the set temp, it still runs the fan even after hitting the temp. But again, not a big deal because it cools quicker and cheaper than the central AC!The hose and window kit it comes with can be improved upon a lot. The plastic slide pieces leave good size gaps and the foam insert they provide is super thin so worthless for that. Had to get thicker foam from Ace Hardware instead. The hose is not very flexible at all so the unit does take up a bit of space being so far away from the wall. But because of the filter and air exchange being on the back, it makes sense why you wouldn’t want it to close to the wall to begin with.Overall a great unit and highly recommend it for anyone!

The media could not be loaded.  I’ve seen a lot of reviews on this product, some good, some bad ,which could be very misleading. I’m going to try to set the record straight……. I’ve waited about a month to write this because I wanted to test the product before writing so that I can give an honest review. In my opinion this is probably the best air conditioner I’ve ever gotten ! this is my first time buying an actual portable air conditioner so I had to do a lot of research some come with the hardware some don’t some don’t fit certain Windows, some do so it was all very confusing. The good thing about this air conditioner is that it comes with the necessary hardware for any type of sliding window! (Not windows that you have to crank open but ones that slide up or sideways) Which is a huge plus because those can cost almost a hundred bucks in themselves. Good price point, for 10000 BTU air conditioner I’ve been seeing portables in the 4 to $600 range so this is a great value in my eyes.comes with a remote that is easy to use has lots of settings, and is programmable to set sleep settings. (you would have to read the manual in order to figure it out but it’s a good option to have) also has a dehumidifier mode that I myself have not yet used so I can’t comment on that, but it comes with the draining tube in order to use it. The noise level to me doesn’t seem like it’s any louder than any other air conditioner, but I guess it could be annoying to certain people? in the video I have it at 65 degrees and it’s on the highest fan setting and that’s as loud as I’ve ever heard it but it’s not bad to me and my fiance. we have a 18 x 20 bedroom and it not only cools our bedroom but also cools some of the living room in the next room. Overall I think this is an awesome air conditioner. it’s made by a name you can trust, and I’m happy I purchased it!

May 2019, Update: a year later and it’s still running strong; my son ran it all year even through the winter but only at night. We haven’t yet had to change out the water reservoir, only keep the filter clean.May 24, 2018: Just installed it today so I’m not rating the longevity of the product which is why I only picked 4 stars. I’m not there yet. I can say I bought it for a room that gets the most direct sun and is always 10 degrees or more warmer than the rest of the house. It’s a miserable room. Everything that was needed for the window and all the hoses we’re included. Instructions and installation was simple and easy to understand even for this old woman. The room was cooled down very quickly and is finely comfortable.

Just moved to NYC and this is my first time with an external air conditioner (I’ve had Central AC my whole life) so I was a little nervous on how to install and hoping I would get a good one but I’m so glad I got this one!Does it’s job and cools, it’s a little loud but what air conditioner is totally quiet anyways…I’ve posted a photo and video for everyone to see how loud it is. In the video it is on the lowest fan mode in the cooling setting.

I have tested this product for about 2 months now, here is my findings.1) it is a small AC for a 14,000 BTU, ideal if you are trying to save space.2) The sliding window panels used to connect to the vacuum cleaner looking attachment isn’t sturdy enough enough, the plastic pieces tend to bend when trying to connect. Luckily I had my old window set up from my 12k BTU Amana portable AC which was much more durable. I suggest B&D make those sliding window panel a heavier.3) it blows ICE WATER cold when running optimal, but there is a catch here. The fans on this unit seems very sensitive to obstruction of air through the rear vent. I noticed after a day or two of running the fans started to malfunction to the point it sounded broken and I had to turn it off. I took the screen out and started it up again and it instantly started running great. To further test I put a piece of towel over a small portion of the fins at different points and the fans started to instantly malfunction. I think this is the give-to-get rule with a 14k BTU AC this small, because of its size you have to keep the screen VERY CLEAN at all times. I washed it every time I use it, and I have yet to have malfunctioning fan issues. When clean it blows very cold as will do so on any fan speed.4) the remote works well, it can pick the signal up without you facing it with all options working immediately.5) The unit has strong fans, it can blow air 10-15 feet up or down depending on how you adjust the louver’s. It was able to cool a 400sq ft space that was 80 degrees to 67 degrees in a half hour, it’s a little bull dog of an AC and it will run through the night.6) if you are lazy, don’t buy this, to get optimal performance you need to clean it/drain the water etc more often, but the reward is it kicks ass on a hot day.

*Update*It’s been almost 2 years and I am still loving this a/c. I remove the vent assembly in the winter and reinstall it when needed. It still cools my home as expected. I’d still recommend it! In face, I’m ordering another one right now for my ver hot laundry room 😁*************************************Sometimes shopping online is difficult because reviews are all over the place. I am so glad I ignored the negative reviews and purchased this unit! Is it as quiet as having central a/c? No, of course not. And you’re not very bright if you expect it to be. When it’s running I don’t even have to turn the volume up for the television. Our window unit was absolutely deafening and we could barely talk to each other even when sitting side by side on the sofa. Forget hearing the tv. So this was a pleasant surprise. I’d read so many reviews that it was noisy. We put this in the corner of the living room and having it pointing toward the middle of the living room which is approximately 15’x30’. Sea he vent to the window and it is nicely hidden by my drapes (and some other stuff lol). I set it to 74 and the room cooled down within 10 minutes. The living room is longer than it is wide and we sit about 20 feet away from the unit. The living room leads into the dining/kitchen and I can feel it all the way in there so I’d say it cools nicely.I thought about buying a 2nd unit for the master bedroom but decided since this is portable I’ll just roll it in there.Pros:Attractive (more so than a window unit)PortableMultifunction (cools and dehumidify)Cools quickly and quietlyCovers a pretty large areaRemote control makes life easier for couch potatoesNo unsightly window unit banging away and blocking your view out the windowCons:Window vent was too wide for the window and we had to cut it to size. It would be nice if the manufacturer made a shorter panel. All in all I am very pleased with this unit and would highly recommend it.
